The Department of Engineering Physics at the Florida Polytechnic University seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor with broad teaching capacity that supports an undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics, commitment to teaching at all levels in the curriculum, and has expertise aligned (Associate Professor or Full – and has demonstrated research track record) with one or more of the following areas: experimental physics, condensed matter physics, energy systems, optics, quantum physics, or solid state devices.

The appointment will be made at the Assistant Professor level and may begin as early as January 2, 2023, but no later than August 14, 2023. For Associate Professor or Professor level, appointment will begin on August 15, 2023. Opportunity for spring 2023 start is also available.

The Department of Engineering Physics at Florida Polytechnic University offers a program in Engineering Physics, newly launched in August 2019. The degree program core consists of a balance between physics, engineering sciences, and engineering design courses. The department is undertaking preliminary self-study processes intended for eventual ABET-EAC evaluation.

This position is part of a strategic expansion of the department that will add approximately three faculty to the current four full time faculty members within the department. As a part of this faculty expansion, the department will be placing special emphasis on Physics 1 & 2 instruction, improving the department’s core degree offering and and establishing a research presence, based on faculty research activity, for the department.

Assistant Professor

Applicants must demonstrate commitment to teaching and teaching excellence in support of the department’s degree program as well as entry-level courses such as Physics 1 & 2. Individuals must be prepared to establish a personal research presence based upon participation in extramural funding efforts, publication of research results in leading scientific journals of their discipline, and supervision of undergraduate students. Candidates are expected to assist in the broader educational mission of the department.

Associate Professor or Professor

Ideally, applicants will provide evidence of prior success in teaching (both undergraduate and graduate), curriculum development, and research with an established record of independent research productivity and funding, publication history in high quality, peer reviewed journals, and supervision of graduate and/or undergraduate students.

  • Ph.D. in Physics, or closely related field, where the degree must be complete before a candidate’s starting date.
  • For Associate Professor or Professor , six years of experience as a faculty member or as an independent researcher.

  • Teaching and/or relevant research/industry experience
  • Evidence of successful teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level
  • Experience in the design of courses and academic programs.
  • Experience with students’ academic advising and mentoring
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent and interdisciplinary funded applied research.
  • Active participation in professional activities and organizations.
  • Prior professional US experience with progressive increases in responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus community.

For Associate Professor / Professor
  • Significant teaching experience at all levels within undergraduate degree programs.
  • Course and curriculum development expertise.
  • Experience with students’ academic mentoring and as a thesis advisor.
  • Funded research experience as a Principal Investigator.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify project opportunities and independently develop proposals that are subsequently funded.
