Job Description Summary
This position will assist in the management of multiple clinical trials and responsibilities in specific research area. Coordinate the screening of patients, subject enrollment, collection and storage of biological samples and related study documents, and collection of clinical data. Assist with Institutional Review Board (IRB) filings and inquiries, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts, grant proposals, and research related presentations. Works closely with the Principal Investigator, manager, and study team to identify problems and develop solutions. Implement approved changes to procedures as needed and monitor results. Responsible for study coordination for investigator-initiated studies, multi-center research studies, and patient-oriented clinical and translational research projects.

Job Description

We are seeking to hire a Clinical Research Coordinator A/B to join a growing research program, BeSAFIR (Behavioral Science and Analytics for Injury Reduction). BeSAFIR ( ) is led by M. Kit Delgado, MD, MS in the Center for Emergency Care Policy and Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine with close affiliations with the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics, the Penn Injury Science Center, and the CHOP Center for Injury Research and Prevention.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to coordinate federally-funded research studies related to preventing acute injuries. One of the main studies the person will be coordinating will be aimed at reducing firearm injuries among young adults. There are currently two federally funded research studies aimed at reducing gun violence that requires in-person recruitment in the evenings and on the weekends in the Emergency Departments at the Hospital for the University of Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center.

Duties for a Clinical Research Coordinator A include a variety of research and administrative tasks, such as:

  • Recruiting patients in the emergency department at HUP and PPMC, collecting data, and assisting in the follow-up procedures of the study. Recruiting of patients for the study involves reviewing informed consent documentation and questions from patients, utilizing a tablet device to conduct the surveys, and giving monetary compensation and referral information to patients.
  • Organizing and maintaining collected participant research data. Performing medical record abstraction when needed.
  • Participating in research meetings and carrying out routine correspondence in regards to project activities.
  • Documenting accurate encounters and shift events, adhering to all study procedures, and communicating daily/weekly updates to project manager.
  • Entering data in study database.
  • Performing and documenting risk assessments.
  • Assisting the project manager in regulatory document preparation and submission

This position is funded for one year and contingent on continued funding. The required hours for this position will be in the evenings (for example, 3-11pm) and on the weekends. Exact hours can be discussed.

In addition to the duties listed above, the Coordinator B will also provide on-site supervision to student workers and research assistants, independently prepare and submit regulatory and sponsor documentation, edit study materials, and work with research partners to solve problems and develop strategies to meet study objectives.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to handle a variety of clinical trial related tasks including the planning and implementation of recruitment and retention activities, managing all aspects of study participant visits, and monitoring the performance of external study sites in accordance with University of Pennsylvania. This position will also require coordination of many of these activities through an online portal ( ).


CRC "A" - Bachelor's Degree with 1-2 years of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Evening and weekend hours are required. The ideal candidate will experience working with diverse populations; an understanding of injury prevention; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; experience managing data; and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely fashion.

CRC "B" - Bachelor's Degree with 2-4 years of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Evening and weekend hours are required. The ideal candidate will have the skills listed above, as well as experience with employee supervision and retention, regulatory and sponsor documentation, and collaboration with research partners.
