Reporting to the Associate Dean for Biddle Law Library, the Deputy Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the library. They will oversee all library operations, services, and personnel. The Deputy Director collaborates with the Associate Dean on the development and implementation of the mission, goals, and broad policy directions for the law library and in providing operational leadership (e.g., strategic planning, administration, assessment, communication, and budget management). In partnership with the Associate Dean, this position will collaborate with other administrators and leaders across the law school, university, and consortia.

Job Description

Library Operations and Administration
  • As a key member of the Biddle Law Library leadership team, the Deputy Director will play a critical role in ensuring that the full potential of Biddle Law Library as a vital center for research, teaching, and innovation within the law school, the university, and an international community of scholars is realized.
  • Providing vision, leadership, and strategic direction that support the services and staff of the law library.
  • Overseeing day-to-day library operations.
  • Leading or participating in substantial library procurements (e.g., large vendor contracts, significant equipment purchases).
  • Representing the Biddle Law Library on Law School and Penn Library committees and, in coordination with the Associate Dean, may represent Biddle Law Library at meetings or events.
  • Leading data compilation for required reporting to the ABA, ARL, USNWR, and ALLStAR Benchmarking reports.
  • As a member of the leadership team, facilitates a culture of assessment, continuous improvement, and risk tolerance.

Management and Supervision
  • Supervision of multiple library department heads.
  • Oversight and management of collection development functions.

Professional Development
  • Contributes to the library's teams and strategic initiatives.
  • Serves on professional committees and attends conferences.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and new information regarding legal education, management and leadership, and library services.

Required qualifications:
  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school (or foreign equivalent) and master's degree from ALA-accredited program for library/information science (or foreign equivalent).
  • Minimum seven years of experience in libraries with increasing supervisory responsibility, including at least three years of managing, developing, and evaluating a team.
  • Excellent management skills.
  • Commitment to and demonstrated success in mentoring and support for staff professional development.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships across the institution.
  • Ability to work effectively and creatively with a rigorous, highly interdisciplinary, and research-oriented faculty, student body, and staff.
  • Demonstrated excellence in ability to solve problems and make decisions in a rapidly evolving and unpredictable environment.
  • Understanding of management and leadership trends, concepts, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated excellence in change management.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with law library collection management and development.
  • Experience in library technical services.
  • Experience in budgeting, strategic planning, and assessment.
  • Experience in negotiating with vendors.
  • Demonstrated success working across library departments to create effective service models.
  • Record of innovation in libraries - at the institutional, regional, and/or national levels.
  • Teaching experience.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
