Job Description Summary
The Modzelewski Lab at the University of Pennsylvania Department of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine is recruiting a Researcher Specialist B, C or D (Bioinformatician, Computational Biologist, BioStatistician) to join an exciting new NIH-NICHD funded project. Our work focuses on the exciting and emerging role of retrotransposons in early development and disease using mouse as a model system along with comparative biology using various mammalian species to learn about human health and reproduction.

Job Description

Research Specialist will be involved in planning and conducting ongoing research to study retrotransposon reactivation in development and disease in a team setting. The candidate will be responsible for the majority of the bioinformatics efforts of the team, working closely with wet-bench scientists and bioinformaticians from collaborating labs. Understanding the biological questions and providing rigorous statistical and bioinformatic expertise is a requirement of this position with a goal to discover new therapeutic targets in disease, cancer and fertility treatments. The candidate should have statistics and bioinformatics experience, basic programming skills (familiarity with python, R, and bash), and a background or strong interest in developmental biology, epigenetics, immunology, or cancer immunotherapy. Candidate will be involved in tool development for analyzing large volumes of high-throughput experimental data including but not limited to single-cell genomics and imaging measurements and participating in subsequent data analysis and data integration. Contributing to maintenance of multiomic single-cell genomics and imaging data analysis pipelines. The candidate will manage large repositories of sequence data, and perform analyses on different types of sequencing datasets, including but not limited to CUT & RUN, ChIP-Seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-Seq, and HiC. The individual will also assist in writing manuscripts and grants, with a focus on the statistical and bioinformatics aspects. Opportunities for training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students and interfacing with existing postdoctoral fellows and students in the laboratory. Close partnership with Principal Investigator to ensure success of all research studies. Experimental planning (wet lab) and execution is preferred but not required.

Qualifications:

Specialist B : Bachelor's Degree in computational or life sciences with at least 2-3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specialist C : Master's Degree in computational or life sciences with at least 2-3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specialist D : Master's Degree in computational or life sciences with at least 4-5 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD is a plus.

General: Proficiency in Python, R programing and an active interest in bioinformatics, genomics, data visualization, or machine learning applications. Basic system administration basic knowledge and experience with data visualization and/or server-side programming such as PHP, Bash, node.js, D3.js are preferred. Experience working with large genomic sequence data is preferred. Ability to write clear, concise, and efficient code with documentation. Position encourages a hybrid of Wet and Dry Lab, but very flexible. Previous mouse handling experience is a plus but not essential.

Specialist B : Targeted pay range: $37,220.00 - $56,087.33

Specialist C : Targeted pay range: $43,919.00 - $66,183.00

Specialist D : Targeted pay range: $51,824.00 - $78,096.00
