Job Description Summary
The Clinical Research Lab Technician A/B would be part of the Infectious Disease Clinical Trials Group. Primary duties include procuring, triaging, processing, and shipping laboratory specimens (blood, urine, CSF, genital secretions) for the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU), Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) as well as other programs in Infectious Diseases including COVID-related research.

Job Description


Clinical Research Lab Technician A: The Clinical Research Lab Technician will support the Infectious Disease Clinical Trials Unit, consisting of multiple projects focused on HIV, COVID-19, and other Infectious Diseases.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Learning and abiding by laboratory SOPs, protocol specific lab manuals, and reviewing changes as they occur
  • Working closely with the Primary Investigators, Program Manager, Lab Manager, Research/Clinical Staff to ensure study specimens are collected, processed, stored, and shipped in compliance with protocol requirements and timepoints
  • Collecting/entering specimen data and resolving data entry errors/queries
  • Maintaining specimen kits per protocol and frequently reviewing supplies and expiration dates
  • Processing study specimens and preparing necessary assays while using aseptic technique
  • Troubleshoot any biospecimen-related issues that may arise
  • Participating in reoccurring study team meetings and ongoing protocol training.
  • Showing vigilance in laboratory safety, protocol compliance, data integrity, and preventing specimen contamination
  • Participating in site initiation visits, interim monitoring visits, audits, and close-out visits as needed
  • Responding to concerns regarding stored specimens in the event of an emergency, such as freezer malfunctions
  • Adhering to all University of Pennsylvania, local, state and federal standards/regulations, and GCLP guidelines.

Clinical Research Lab Technician B: In addition to above, this position may be responsible for more complex sample processing, will have less supervision, and will need to use more independent judgment in their day to day activities.


Effective problem solving abilities; effective communication; strong organizational and time management skills; flexible and able to multi-task; strong attention to detail; demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently; strong aseptic technique; self-motivated; high reliable and good work ethic required. Knowledge of PC applications and experience in data entry is preferred. Position contingent on funding.

Clinical Research Lab Technician A: HS Education/GED Required. Vocational/Technical School or Associates Degree Preferred. 1-2 years of related lab specimen processing experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) preferred.

Clinical Research Lab Technician B: HS Education/GED Required. Vocational/Technical School or Associates Degree Preferred. 2-3 years of related lab specimen processing experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) preferred.
