Unpacking the Past (UtP) is a free multi-point program offered to 6th and 7th grade classes in Philadelphia Title I schools. The program includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture. The Senior Museum Educator will drive to schools across the city to teach existing lessons that introduce students to concepts related to ancient history and human connectedness. Other days, this person will work with students at the Penn Museum - facilitating existing gallery lessons/tours and hands-on classroom workshops. The Senior Museum Educator will help with ongoing UtP program design, including program evaluation and content research. In the summer (and to a lesser extent during the school year) the Senior Museum Educator will focus on supporting either teachers (through professional development and resource creation) or high school students (through coordinating internship and other program opportunities).

Job Description

If so, we hope you will apply to work as a Senior Museum Educator in the Penn Museum's Unpacking the Past program. Unpacking the Past (UtP) is a free multi-point program offered to 6th and 7th grade classes in Philadelphia Title I schools. The program reaches approximately 6,000 students in about 100 schools and includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture.

Supervised by the Associate Director of School Programs, the Senior Museum Educator (SME) is part of the Unpacking the Past team, which includes two Senior Museum Educators and two Part-Time Museum Educators. During the school year, the SME works closely with the rest of the UtP team to facilitate in-class and in-Museum lessons that introduce students to concepts related to ancient history and connections to modern life. Whenever possible, educators will teach the same students in both settings (school and Museum). During the school year, the SME can expect to teach about 15-20 hours per week (3-4 hours per day, M-F). The rest of the day will be spent working on ongoing UtP program design, program evaluation, content research, and new lesson creation.

In the summer (and to a lesser extent during the school year) the SME will coordinate efforts to support either teachers (through professional development and resource creation) or high school students (through coordinating internship and other program opportunities).

We work with students who represent a diversity of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, languages, learning styles, and abilities. Many of these students have never visited the Penn Museum before and we prioritize making them feel comfortable and welcome in this new setting. The Senior Museum Educator will join a dynamic teaching team that uses inclusive teaching methods such as inquiry-based, interdisciplinary, multi-modal, and anti-racist teaching strategies. Candidates should be committed to working with diverse communities and have demonstrated experience teaching children in a classroom, museum, or other informal learning environment. Candidates should also have a passion for learning about human history and for teaching children.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in humanities, education, museum studies, cultural studies, or related field, or HS degree with demonstrated teaching experience working with middle school students
  • 2-3 years experience teaching and/or programming, in-person and/or virtually, within PreK-12 classroom, or in museum or other informal learning environments
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. to bring materials offsite to classrooms
  • Must be self-motivated, organized, and goal oriented
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have valid Driver's license, and be willing to drive to offsite locations; car to be provided
  • Some weekend and holiday work are required
  • Ability to manage students in a classroom setting
  • Real passion for learning new things


Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic a plus
  • Strong connections to diverse communities in Philadelphia a plus
  • Experience coordinating and managing events/projects
