Job Description Summary
As a leading law school, Penn Carey Law has an obligation to its students and the broader legal industry to drive the profession forward and give future lawyers the skills and perspectives they need to meet the needs of the people they serve.
The Law School launched the Future of the Profession Initiative ("FPI") in Spring 2020 to explore the professional landscape in the legal services industry. FPI's network features world-renowned experts who bring decades of deep thought in their fields to drive meaningful and novel conversations. With a focus on cross-disciplinary perspectives, FPI takes a broad interest in the legal profession's future. FPI contemplates topics that include promoting diversity, equity & inclusion, improving the health and well-being of lawyers, and using design thinking, creativity, data, and technology to develop new solutions that will expand and enhance legal service delivery.
FPI develops new curriculum, projects, and programs that equip students and alumni with tools to lead through a changing landscape. The FPI team impacts the legal field by spearheading advocacy, launching new curricular offerings, and developing new impactful projects.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Future of the Profession Initiative, the Project Director understands the goals of each FPI project and develops a tactical plan of action to execute existing and new endeavors and assess/measure project outcomes. The Project Director develops sustainable and well-paced systems that support FPI leadership in scaling FPI's impact by moving projects forward expeditiously.
FPI hopes to grow its projects to respond to the accelerating challenges and expanding need for new solutions in the legal field. To that end, the Project Director works with FPI team members to gather and organize knowledge about similar projects in other organizations, including other schools at Penn. In these efforts, the Project Director serves as an extension of FPI during meetings, virtual meetings, and other discussions with various stakeholders. As projects grow in number and complexity, the Project Director will develop a working knowledge of each project's status, which community members can help advance the project, and understand how tasks and projects relate to each other and advance FPI's mission.
This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible term position that will terminate June 30, 2024.

Job Description

Responsibilities Include:

Managing Projects
  • Design tactical plans to execute strategic initiatives.
  • Develop robust internal systems to guide project planning, including partner departments, stakeholders, and/or external resources necessary to execute project components.
  • Create easily digestible and accessible project plans, such as Gantt charts or similar organizational templates.
  • Collaborate with fellow FPI team members to develop an appropriate division of labor for tasks involved in each project. Complete tasks FPI team members who lead projects deem appropriate for the Project Director to assume.
  • Update team members on project developments, challenges, and upcoming deadlines.
  • Meet regularly with team members responsible for projects and collaborate to organize various pieces of information, including necessary stakeholders, resources required, next steps, and deadlines.

Gathering and organizing information to inform new projects
  • Schedule and attend meetings with leaders of existing projects in other organizations and schools around Penn.
  • Take and organize detailed notes that capture knowledge about initiatives FPI might emulate.
  • Create written reports that aggregate information FPI team members gather about model projects and list the next steps for further exploration or execution.
  • Work closely with Biddle Law Librarians to research and gather information about projects outside of Penn Carey Law that might inform FPI priorities.

Coordinating and proofreading thought leadership content, including newsletters, podcast transcripts, website content, social media posts, and other written materials.
  • Working with marketing vendor, Biddle Law Librarian, and Executive Director, select articles, event information, and other resources for inclusion in monthly newsletter.
  • Extend invitations to authors for newsletter articles and blog posts. Manage deadlines for author submissions and follow up as needed to communicate edits or other adjustments.
  • Review monthly social media calendar for grammar and composition. Review industry articles selected for alignment with FPI's mission and focus.
  • Attend monthly marketing meetings to understand marketing strategy goals and progress.
  • Join FPI Administrative Coordinator in attending other Law School meetings related to Communications and Event Planning.
  • Working with Executive Director, draft copy for website, event summaries, and other written materials.

In coordination with FPI team members, serve as a liaison between FPI and other departments and schools/centers at Penn to complete tasks required to advance projects.
  • Work closely with FPI Administrative Coordinator, Penn Carey Law Conferences and Events team, and external vendors to facilitate payment of invoices related to project execution.
  • Communicate with visitors, participants, audience members, and other individuals engaged with FPI programming.
  • Serve as a liaison between FPI and other Penn Carey Law departments to solve problems and resolve tasks.

Other Duties as Assigned
  • Proactively escalate and resolve potential issues by calling them to the attention of the Executive Director and proposing possible solutions.
  • Comfortably navigate ambiguity.

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years working in fast-paced environments that require structured approaches to managing projects, organized information, concrete steps to bring high-level concepts to life.
  • Ability to work flexibly in line with the organization's objectives and willingness to undertake other duties reasonably requested.
  • Project management skills and experience.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • A track record in leading and delivering complex projects and partnerships, often managing a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comfortable with self-direction and ambiguous environments that require the creation of organizational systems.
  • Knowledge of University systems and software, including WorkDay, Concur, Canvas, LiveWhale, Zoom, preferred.
  • Able to receive constructive feedback and adjust as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Commitment to Penn Carey Law ideals is required.
