Job Description

The responsibilities of the application developer include analyzing complex legacy codebases in order to troubleshoot and optimize code, with a particular emphasis on User Interfaces. In addition to writing high quality application code, the application developer will review peers' code for readability, correctness, and efficiency. He or she should expect to plan and conduct testing and to create useful documentation. Duties also include translating informally expressed requirements from users and stakeholders into applications, participating actively in the team's agile development process, and supporting Continuous Integration/Continuous Development objectives. The application developer will also be expected to maintain familiarity with state of the art in technologies - particularly UI Frameworks - of potential use to Nursing, to take advantage of opportunities for technical education & training, and to coordinate as necessary with other internal UPenn technology services and organizations.


1) Analyze complex legacy codebases in order to troubleshoot and optimize code, with a particular emphasis on User Interfaces.
  • Write clear, reliable, and efficient application code
  • Review peers' code for readability, correctness, and efficiency
  • Develop test plans, conduct manual testing, and write automated tests
  • Create useful documentation

2) Assist in translating informally expressed requirements from users and stakeholders into applications.
  • Participate in technical discussions as part of a consensus-driven approach to technical problem solving.
  • Maintain source code quality and integrity with source code version control tools such as git.

3) Participate actively in the team's agile development process.
  • Make use of agile related tooling (sprint board, drop plan, etc.)
  • Support Continuous Integration/Continuous Development objectives

4) Maintain familiarity with state of the art in UI frameworks, cloud deployment, and other technologies of potential use to Nursing.
  • Attend Penn organized events such as Dev-SIG and Cloud-SIG, and vendor organized events as appropriate.
  • Find and take advantage of online courses and other opportunities for technical education and training.

5) Identify and cultivate proper channels for coordinating integrations and resolving incidents with other internal UPenn technology services and organizations.

6) Perform additional duties as assigned.


Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, 2 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. They should be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of User Interface development. Proficiency in Javascript and HTML/CSS is a must, and familiarity with C#/DotNet is a plus. In addition, applications must exhibit the analytical and problem-solving skills required for automating complex business requirements. Also essential are the communication and interpersonal skills necessary to building a healthy team dynamic and the ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously with attention to detail and respect for deadlines.
