Job Description Summary
The Athletic Communications office is the most public element of the University's Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics (DRIA) and its 33 varsity programs, and is charged with the goal of positively promoting the University's nearly 1,000 student-athletes and more than 200 coaches, staff and athletic administrators.

Responsibilities

Primary media contact for at least three sports

Basically the front porch for the programs with which they work, as all external publicity for the programs comes from this office; coordinates and oversees all media-related responsibilities for their teams (primarily interviews with coaches and team members); oversees all elements of Penn website, PennAthletics.com, related to teams (game previews/recaps, roster/schedule management, features for video); social media and travel as necessary (see below); record keeper and archivist; works closely with their respective coaching staffs to provide the best information and most positive promotion of each program for all constituents including fans, alums, parents, recruits and their parents, and donors.

Social media

Penn Athletics has Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, and the Athletic Communications Office has sole propriety over their usage. In addition, every varsity program has social-media accounts on many if not all of the above networks. This person is in charge of overseeing and implementing a social-media strategy for the entire department in coordination with the communications, marketing, video content, and coaching staffs of our varsity programs. This includes direct oversight and execution of the main Penn Athletics accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Coordinate game-day activities

Handles media requests including setting up parking and credentials; oversees execution of in-game stats; coordinates post-game interviews between on-site media and Penn players/coaches and visiting players/coaches as necessary.

Supporting outside DRIA departmental needs (development, marketing)

Among other things, this person coordinates with marketing to promote ticket events, ticket sales, student outreach through social media/website; coordinates media or social media/website coverage of Athletics-related development events, especially related to their sports; make sure the Ivy League Network and their personnel are taken care of for broadcasts of their sports; works with JMI to make sure we are fulfilling sponsorship obligations on social media and in gameday programs related to their sport; coordinates with facilities/operations for game-day operations (parking for media, TV/radio needs, etc.).

Travel with teams

Travels when necessary (i.e., TV game, NCAA competition, or any event that might warrant on-site coverage and/or is expected have a solid media presence).

Statistical support

Handles all statistics for their sports and properly archives and publishes (website, etc.) and maintains the record books.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree is required, preferably in Communications or journalism; minimum 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior sports information experience preferred. Computer knowledge with desktop publishing and in-game statistics mandatory; strong grasp of AP style necessary for quality control of all publications. Knowledge of NCAA/Ivy League policies and procedures. Position requires frequent travel and willingness to work evenings/weekends/holidays as necessary. Valid driver's license required

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
