Job Description Summary
The Director of the Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) is responsible for the oversight of regulatory compliance, post-approval monitoring, and administration of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at the University of Pennsylvania. Duties include, but are not limited to, oversight of unit focused on compliance and post-approval monitoring; oversight of unit that manages all administrative aspects of the protocol review process, including staff support of IACUC, such as pre-review of protocols; directly supervise associate director of IACUC, Compliance Manager and Compliance Veterinarian; approve activities as designated by the IACUC Chair; coordinate with the IACUC Chair, in the preparation of agendas and minutes of the IACUC's and other required regulatory documents or reports as required; attend all convened meetings of the IACUC as a voting IACUC member; review the existing IACUC policies and procedures and recommend development of new policies and or revisions of procedures to maintain the animal welfare program of the University; act as main source of contact between IACUC reviewers and investigators to provide feedback on the findings and recommendations of the IACUC; oversee all Office projects including protocol development, PennERA, animal welfare initiatives, and research compliance; represents the IACUC in Institutional leadership and animal research initiatives and interacts frequently with high-level officials in many Offices and Departments of the University; communicate with University faculty and staff as well as Federal agencies at many levels.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Represent the IACUC in Institutional leadership and animal research initiatives.
  • Oversee unit focused on compliance and post-approval monitoring, with the Compliance Manager and the new Compliance Veterinarian reporting to the Director.
  • Oversee unit managing all administrative aspects of the protocol review process at Penn including staff support for the IACUC such as pre- review of protocols, with the Assoc Director, IACUC reporting to the director.
  • Review IACUC protocols and amendments.
  • Communicate with faculty regarding IACUC matters.
  • Communicate with federal and other regulatory agencies via direct verbal or written correspondence or generation of annual reports and other filings.
  • Act as IACUC Chair as required.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications:

VMD or DVM from an accredited institution, be licensed in at least one state, and must be at least ACLAM board eligible (board-certification is preferred) plus 7-10 years' experience in laboratory animal medicine or IACUC administration (including residency training) or equivalent combination of education and experience; In depth knowledge of and ability to correctly interpret animal welfare laws, regulations, and policies; previous supervisory experience; knowledge of budgets; strong oral and written communication skills; strong customer service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous research experience preferred.
