Job Description Summary
The Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES) is an undergraduate research program committed to high-quality social research in the public interest on issues of national and international importance with a focus on data analytics.

The Robert A. Fox Leadership Program is one of the most successful student-serving programs anywhere in the country. Fox's core mission is to equip and empower Penn students and alumni for present and future roles as ethical and effective leaders. The program focuses on hands-on leadership experience and connects students with successful leaders for discussion and mentorship.

The Fox/PORES Director for Data Science is responsible for developing, managing and teaching courses in The College of Arts and Sciences. The position will also direct research projects, develop programming and advise and recruit students. Teaching experience in quantitative methods for the social sciences is required. Candidate may also teach Data Analytics courses for the College of Liberal and Professional Studies and an applied statistics course for the Fels MPA program.

A Ph.D. is required for this position.

Job Description

Develop, Manage and Teach Courses: The Fox/PORES Director of Data Science develops and offers Fox-PORES undergraduate training/courses in the data sciences, statistics and election sciences. Develops curriculum and teaches students the programming languages, including but not limited to R. May teach up to 4 courses a year, including a class in The College of Arts and Sciences.

Direct Research Projects: The Fox/PORES Director of Data Science directs PORES research projects and contributes to collaborative projects between PORES and other Penn and non-Penn PORES partner organizations. Leads data analysis projects and manages large-scale research projects. Produces analytical reports.

Programming Review and Development: The Fox/PORES Director of Data Science provides statistical and programing support to PORES faculty and staff. Provides guidance and support on the use of R and Stata and helps faculty and staff interpret and explain the results of the underlying analysis.

Student Advising and Recruitment: The Fox/PORES Director of Data Science is responsible for recruiting and supervising undergraduate, graduate, and recent alumni Fox-PORES fellows

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. required
  • 3-5 years of experience is required
  • Advanced formal training in statistics and the data sciences and advanced programming skills in the R programming language is required
  • Experience managing large-scale research projects is required
  • Proficiency in Python and Stata preferred
