Analytics at Wharton brings together eight existing programs at the School - AI for Business, Computational Social Science for Business, Customer Analytics, Penn Wharton Budget Model, People Analytics, Wharton Neuroscience, Wharton Research Data Services, and Wharton Sports Analytics and Business Initiative and supports new ideas and opportunities to expand the impact of big data analytics on research, curriculum, and industry and alumni engagement.

Job Description

The Senior Research Project Manager will work with the Vice Dean and affiliated faculty to develop and advance the goals of Analytics at Wharton's academic research agenda. The Senior Research Project Manager is responsible for both the strategic planning and day-to-day management of complex research projects, often conducted in partnership with local governments, industry partners, and the academic community. In addition, the Senior Research Project Manager will oversee all grant writing and administration. This position oversees a research team, including a full-time Data Scientist and 6-8 part-time Research Assistants.

Responsibilities include:
  • In conjunction with faculty, develop and execute the strategic goals of Analytics at Wharton's research agenda.
  • Manage multiple research projects simultaneously by coordinating with faculty and external partners, including government workers, industry partners, and the global academic and business community.
  • Lead the development of research projects from inception to completion: develop research proposals, delegate and manage tasks and project deliverables, track progress and assist in the execution of financial processes.
  • Coordinate technical infrastructure and data management of research projects including working with external partners to extract data sets, coordinate preliminary analysis of datasets, and develop robust database environment that supports strategic goals of research projects.
  • Supervise the research team, which includes 1 full-time Data Scientist and 6-8 undergraduate and graduate research assistants, with plans for future expansion as needed. Indirect supervision of PhD students and other staff on a per-project basis. Oversee all student hiring on an annual basis. Assign projects and provide training and feedback as needed to support research projects.
  • Oversee bids, contracts, and workflow for freelance positions including but not limited to software developers, survey research firms, and annotation services.
  • Manage faculty research grants including writing grant proposals and reports. Oversee grant administration and accounting in coordination with department Business Administrator.
  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications for Analytics at Wharton, to facilitate the distribution of research outcomes through digital and print media, radio channels, podcasts, and social media. Communicate event and research announcements and reminders and assist in the development of research content for the website, infographics, and video assets.


This position reports to the Senior Director of Analytics at Wharton.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required, Master's degree is preferred and 5-7 years of work experience in managing complex research projects, organizing academic workshops, conferences, and training events, preferably for the academic community or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing a research team, including student workers, software developers, and data analysts, is required.
  • Experience working with local governments and managing inter-agency collaboration, coordinating with executive staff, and working specifically with police departments is preferred.
  • Experience in grant writing, accounting, and administration.
  • Experience building relationships with a wide range of internal and external constituents in a large, complex organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to foster collaboration and teamwork among researchers, local governments, and university departments.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple complex tasks with diverse audiences and varying deadlines is essential.
  • Prior experience using R programming and agile software development is preferred.
