The Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing is providing an exciting opportunity for a social science methodologist to engage in inquiry that addresses the research priorities of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR) at Penn Nursing.

CHOPR at Penn Nursing is a research and research-training enterprise focusing on the organization and delivery of nursing care services and its impact on health outcomes, health disparities, and policy. The research team studies health system organization and policy reform and aims to produce empirical evidence to improve the quality of health care, shape health care policy, and redesign health care organizations (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes, home health care), with a focus on improving patient care and reducing racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in health outcomes. Established in 1989 as one of the first centers to scale up rigorous research on the impact of nursing on patient outcomes, CHOPR uses robust empirical evidence to inform policy and produces the next generation of scientists.

We seek candidates in the non-tenure research track, rank will be commensurate with experience. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in sociology, nursing, statistics or health services research related field. The successful candidate must possess a range of methodological experience and expertise applicable in a context of organizational sociology, and health services and policy research. The candidate will be expected to provide leadership in applying and advancing novel methods to answer consequential research questions for practice and policy. Experience with multilevel modeling, longitudinal and panel data, causal inference with observational data, advanced matching methods, large-scale survey research, implementation science and intervention evaluation approaches, data science applications, use of patient claims and electronic health record (EHR) data, and patient outcomes risk adjustment methods, is desired.

Research faculty expectations:

Lead methodology and analytics initiatives with CHOPR investigators.

Lead grant and paper writing around design and methods while contributing to interpretation, presentation, and dissemination of research findings.

Identify, explore, and apply new data driven approaches to evaluate how to best leverage nursing and the health care system to improve patient outcomes through intervention and implementations.

Cultivate a culture of inquiry by questioning or evaluating current practice to improve and advance CHOPR's program of research.

Support research activities in line with the mission of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research (CHOPR), the Director of CHOPR, CHOPR faculty, and the Penn School of Nursing.

Provide leadership, mentorship and consultation to junior researchers or students.

Participate in professional and research center community activities.
