Job Description Summary
Located in the beautiful Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania inspires an understanding of the relationship between plants, people and place through education, research, and horticultural display. It is a destination for plant lovers from Philadelphia and beyond. Home to a collection of more than 13,000 woody plants, the Morris Arboretum is a hub for botany, horticulture, and urban forestry.

Reporting to the Director of Marketing, this 6-month internship beginning in June 2002, is an exciting opportunity for a marketing/communications student or recent graduate to take their education beyond the classroom. The Lee & Steven Laden Marketing Intern will assist the Arboretum's Marketing Department in developing and implementing communication strategies to increase awareness of its offerings among various audiences.

Job Description



Assist department with online and offline marketing through a variety of channels including social media٫ direct mail٫ and web marketing; help prepare and distribute marketing and promotional materials; collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data by surveying Arboretum audiences via online and intercepting visitors onsite; represent the Arboretum at community events and programs; support in other daily marketing tasks as needed.

Writing and Editing:

Assist Digital Marketing Coordinator with writing and editing social media, digital marketing, and Arboretum website copy; assist with photography and videography needs for social media and web.

Public Relations:

Perform outreach to press outlets, magazines, and influencers; assist Communications Coordinator with responding to media; develop and maintain press and member databases; manage and build master lists and event calendars; assist with the planning, coordination of volunteers, support staff, vendors, and more for press conferences and other promotional events.


Assist with management and updating of company database and customer relationship management systems (CRM); submit invoices and POs for payment as necessary; arrange deliveries/pick-up of signage and collateral with vendors.

  • Currently enrolled in a related BS or MA degree program or recent graduate of related program
  • Basic understanding of a variety of marketing techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Driven٫ willing to learn٫ with strong professionalism
  • Comfortable working individually and part of a team
  • Familiarity with the following:
    • MS Office Suite
    • CRM tools
    • Online analytics
    • Google AdWords
  • Experience with photography and videography highly desired

The candidate will also have:
  • A valid driver's license
  • The ability and willingness to work weekends as well as some evenings and holidays

Whomever is selected for this internship should expect to work upwards of 40 hours per week during the summer months (June/July/August) depending on operational need.
