Assistant/Associate Professor in Clinical Small Animal Anesthesia, Academic Clinician

Assistant/Associate Professor in Clinical Small Animal Anesthesia, Academic Clinician

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Mar 09, 2022
Deadline:

The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Anesthesia. This position will be in the Academic Clinician (AC) track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Academic Clinicians spend the majority of their efforts in clinical service and teaching endeavors. The successful candidate will be responsible for didactic, laboratory and clinical teaching of veterinary medical students and interns, participation in patient care, supervision of residents and continuing education for veterinarians. Responsibilities within the hospital typically include elective and emergency daytime practice, teaching rounds, and back up coverage of residents, interns, and nurse anesthetists for emergency after-hours duty. Members of faculty in the Academic Clinician track faculty are primarily devoted to clinical service (42 weeks a year). Time away from clinical service is used for professional development, citizenship to the Department, and teaching, both in didactic and laboratory settings. Developing or maintaining independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track, is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion, and should not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching. Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available.

The Anesthesia program at Penn Vet currently consists of 7 faculty Anesthesiologists (4 ACVAA, 1 ECVAA, 2 board eligible) and 4 anesthesia residents. Two faculty members work exclusively at the small animal hospital, three work exclusively at the large animal hospital, and two rotate between hospitals. At the small animal hospital, the technical staff currently includes 12 full time veterinary nurse anesthetists. In addition to working in a dynamic small animal referral hospital setting, an advantage of this anesthesiology position includes an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding faculty colleagues and residents in surgery, dentistry, critical care, radiology, oncology, ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology, behavior, interventional radiology and internal medicine. The successful candidate should demonstrate a collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork and innovation.

The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes multiple options for retirement savings and tuition benefits for the candidate's spouse or dependent children. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual who enjoys working in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theatres, and fine dining. Philadelphia offers easy access to New York and Washington DC. Additionally, Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge National Park, and many more recreational amenities are within minutes of the city.

The search committee will consider applications immediately and review until an appropriate candidate is identified.
