Associate Director for Budget & Finance (PRN29021B)

The Associate Director for Budget & Finance serves as an integral part of the professional staff within Student Leadership & Involvement, working directly with the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU).  They serve as a professional adviser who is responsible for advising, maintaining and reconciling ledgers and accounts according to generally accepted accounting principles. They also prepare and analyze financial information, prepares reports and financial statements based upon derived statistics and analysis performed, in conjunction with advisement of elected and appointed ASUU student leaders.  

The ASUU Office is a very fast-paced environment with students, staff and community members consistently having various needs from the seven full-time staff, many student employees, and graduate students. As the Associate Director for Budget & Finance, this position provides regular student advisement to the ASUU Vice President of University Relations, the ASUU Finance Director of the Executive Cabinet, the ASUU Student Resources Director of the Executive Cabinet, and the Treasurers of the Student Senate and Student Assembly of the Legislative Branch. This position works closely with student government leaders to creative transformative leadership opportunities that result in effective and efficient, fiscally sound programs and services on behalf of ASUU to student organizations and the campus community. 

The incumbent will report to the Director of Student Leadership & Involvement.

WORK SCHEDULE:           Full Time, Day


  1. Serves as the primary advisor to the ASUU Finance Board, the ASUU Student Resources Board, and the ASUU Vice President for University Relations, assisting these students not only with budget responsibilities but providing challenge and support to aid in their leadership development as well.
  2. Provides advice and guidance to the ASUU Finance Board, and the Treasurers for the ASUU Student Senate and ASUU Assembly in establishing financial guidelines, communicating such guidelines to internal and external stakeholders, and enforcement procedures. 
  3. Oversees the financial processes of ASUU and may assist in the management of Student Leadership & Involvement finances. 
  4. Attends Senate and Assembly meetings when training and/or clarification on ASUU finances is needed.
  5. Assesses budget, revenue, expense, payroll and journal entries, and other accounting documents.
  6. Assist in the training and informing elected and appointed student leaders of annual budget creation and ethical fiscal management.
  7. Analyzes and monitors budgets and expenditures for compliance with fiscal accountability and reporting requirements based on University policies and state law.
  8. Analyzes and forecasts revenue and expenditure trends.
  9. Reconciles balance sheets, cash, general ledger, payroll accounts and supporting journal entries.
  10. Develops accounting systems and documents to support the input and handling of financial data and reports.
  11. Interacts with internal and external auditors and participates in auditing projects.
  12. Forecasts, prepares or directs the preparation of the program budget and monitors expenditures.
  13. Supervises and trains lower level accounting staff, including professional staff and students.
  14. Uses problem solving skills to assist in job and task completion in effective and efficient means. 
  15. Develops and implements department or program specific policies and procedures.
  16. May be required to provide office support, assist students and customer service opportunities, assist in the revision and implementation of policies and procedures, and to participate as staff representation on existing university committees. 
  17. Other duties as assigned.

A thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, and problem solving skills required.
Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. 
Master’s degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.


Experience working directly with students, student leaders, or experience in some type of educational setting.    

This position requires the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles, federal cost accounting regulations and University policies and procedures to a variety of situations. The incumbent must be able to interpret complex policies and effectively communicate the information in an easily understood manner. The incumbent is required to provide analysis of each situation and use professional judgement in reaching a solution. The Associate Director for Budget & Finance is expected to recommend changes to accounting based procedures based upon analysis performed and specialized knowledge. 

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills required as well as a desire to work in a team setting are required.  Ability to work effectively and efficiently with a variety of constituencies including student leaders, parents, faculty/staff, community organizations and vendors is required.  The incumbent must be capable of prioritizing and managing several tasks concurrently in a fast paced environment.  

Incumbents must have the ability to make rational decisions in high-pressure situations, be highly detail oriented, must be available to work occasional nights and weekends for various events and must be physically able to work outdoors, standing for long periods of time.
