Job Description

MindCORE (Mind Center for Outreach, Research, and Education) was established as one of the School of Arts and Sciences' key endeavors under the "Mapping the Mind" initiative identified in the School's strategic plan, Foundations and Frontiers. Designed to unite researchers, programs, and initiatives involving human intelligence and behavior across the University, and with roots in the success of the former Institute for Research in Cognitive Science, MindCORE officially launched January 2018.

A main focus of our center is to catalyze new research on the mind and foster innovative collaborations between different departments and centers within Penn Arts & Sciences, as well as with other Penn schools including the Perelman School of Medicine, Wharton, Engineering, and the Annenberg School for Communication. MindCORE helps consolidate these activities within one umbrella organization and supports them strategically with resources such as seed funds, technology, staffing, and programming to make them more efficient, visible and impactful.

MindCORE participates in a variety of outreach programs, including lectures, partnerships with local museums and community organizations, and community science initiatives, to engage the academic community and the public.

MindCORE facilitates more interaction among a number of brain- and behavior-related undergraduate programs including psychology, biology, linguistics, and Biological Basis of Behavior and is home to the Cognitive Science major. In addition, there are opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research and disseminate the results.

Duties:

This position will serve as the main point of contact for students enrolled in the Cognitive Science Major within the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Housed within MindCORE, Penn's Center for the integrative study of the mind, this position will report to the Faculty Director for Cognitive Science on matters related to the major, and to the Executive Director of MindCORE for student research experiences and outreach as part of the MindCORE staff team.

The Associate Director responsibilities include:
  • Prepare and teach one cognitive science class each year. Prepare assessments and examinations, update and maintain class websites, hold weekly office hours.
  • Advise students, maintain student records, maintain course listings, add/update Lecturer, TA and LA appointments and reappointments and timesheets, certify students for Fall/Spring graduation. Oversee administration of student research funds.
  • Manage recruitment events (majors fair, open house, etc.), graduation reception, student awards, and any student councils to support the major.
  • Advise and support student research activities in Cognitive Science (independent studies, capstones, and semester and summer research experiences) under MindCORE including recruitment, selection, supervision, and program tracking and evaluation.
  • Plan and coordinate MindCORE outreach activities in support of student and faculty interest.


QUALIFICATIONS:

A PhD Degree in a field related to Cognitive Science (psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, etc.) is required. Laboratory experience essential, and proven administrative, scientific and management skills, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
