Job Description Summary

Acting as the senior operating officer for Wharton Executive Education's (WEE) four business units (Online, LIVE, Custom, Open Enrollment), the Managing Director of Operations is tasked with overseeing the administrative and operational functions of Wharton Executive Education. Working under the leadership and vision of the Faculty Vice Dean, this role will ensure that the day-to-day operations of the organization runs effectively and efficiently.

Wharton Executive Education's four distinct business units: Online, LIVE, Custom and Open Enrollment, are each responsible for their revenues, expenses, and contribution to the school. Managing Director of Operations will work with each of these business units to implement, maintain, and improve business processes that allow each business unit to produce excellent programing while maintaining fiscal prudence and responsibility. In this capacity, the Managing Director of Operations will serve as a partner to the Managing Directors of all the business units to ensure adequate support for optimum revenue generation and cost controls. This position will oversee all shared services for these business units, including IT, Administration and Facilities for Executive Education.

Job Description

The Managing Director will serve as part of WEE's leadership team, working with the Vice Dean and other Managing Directors, to chart the path for the future of the group. The Managing Director will work with the Faculty Vice Dean and the Managing Directors of all four business units to arrive at annual budgets and goals, and will coordinate with the F&A Team to monitor and report on periodic reporting of performance relative to goals. In order to improve the operational efficiency of WEE, the Managing Director will liaison with the school's Finance, HR, Operations, IT, Marketing offices; and as needed, with other School and University departments. The Managing Director will also guide and manage the relationship with the operating partner for Steinberg Conference Center and be responsible for the economics of the Center.

QUALIFICATIONS: Managing Director of Operations will have a Master's Degree, preferably an MBA, with 15 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Deep understanding of budgeting and periodic reporting preferably in a university or a professional services environment is required. Experience in independently managing operations of a business unit such as executive education, or a major academic program with proven success in improving operational effectiveness is necessary. Experience in leading a team of professionals engaged in providing shared services and guiding and managing the relationship with the operating partner of WEE's facility will be a plus. Candidate should have excellent communication skills, be adept at managing people both with and without formal authority, and able to balance effectiveness with efficiency in running a large and complex organization.
