Job Description

Information Systems & Computing (ISC) is the University of Pennsylvania's central IT organization, providing infrastructure and services upon which Penn's numerous Schools and Centers build their unique tools and capabilities. ISC's 270-plus employees work closely with the University's IT organizations in order to create, deliver and support products and services that help Schools and Centers operate efficiently and effectively. http://www.isc.upenn.edu/

Technology Services provides systems engineering, operations, networking, telecommunications, and collaboration services for use by the global University community.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reports to the Unified Communications IT Manager. Works under the limited supervision of an ISC IT Project Leader in providing frontline support for the Traditional Telephony service. Install, maintain, and service a variety of telephone equipment including cabling, emergency phones, and fax lines. Support the effort to transition the entire traditional telephony portfolio to modern offerings.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide support for fiber and copper-based telephony circuits. Install, maintain, relocate, and troubleshoot circuits and phone equipment.
  • Monitor elevator and emergency phones. Dispatch to campus locations to troubleshoot problems.
  • Working with the telephony support team, maintain an inventory of phone lines. Trace circuits and visit locations to identify circuits and audit for usage.
  • Organize and complete day-to-day operations assigned through work orders and trouble tickets.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, vendors, and Penn's voice services team members.

Qualifications - Required
  • Associate's Degree or Two Year College equivalent required, or an equivalent combination of education and 3 to 5 years of experience required. Completion of college courses, vocational school, or technical certifications with an emphasis in Telecommunications or Electronics is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of copper and fiber cabling for telephony circuits and IP-based telephony. Ability to support backbone infrastructure. Troubleshooting and repair skills required.
  • Experience with basic cable testers, and other tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of telecommunications systems is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, particularly with abilities to provide detailed reports of progress.
  • Ability to operate independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently. Use good judgment and be organized, flexible, and patient.
  • Will regularly access locations in basements, wiring closets, and tight spaces.
  • Will be required to work on campus
  • Will be required to participate in off hour on call rotation

This is a full time position with budgeted funding for a 3-year term. Continuation beyond the current 3-year term is contingent upon funding.

Qualifications - Preferred
  • Existing knowledge of Penn's campus strongly preferred
  • Solid experience with computing applications such as Remedy ticketing system and/or Microsoft Office products
  • Desire to learn and grow strongly preferred.
  • Experience with VoIP systems, e-fax services, or cellular systems a plus.
