Job Description Summary
The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania inspires an understanding of the relationship between plants, people and place through education, research and horticultural display. Located in the Northwest section of the city, the Morris Arboretum is a destination for plant lovers from Philadelphia and beyond. The home to a collection of more than 13,000 woody plants and host to special and educational events. Morris Arboretum is a hub for botany, horticulture and urban forestry and a special part of Penn.

Job Description

The Plant Curatorial Intern assists the Plant Records Manager in inventorying and assessing the living collections, mapping, and labeling for the public. This internship will receive extensive training in plant records and mapping software, assists visiting researchers and fulfills research material requests. The intern works closely with other members of the Plant Sciences Department and occasionally with members of the Horticulture and Urban Forestry Departments. The successful candidate will gain a broad knowledge of temperate woody plants through close study of the nearly 3,000 taxa in our living collections.

Duties
  • Work with curatorial staff to document,evaluate and inventory living collections.
  • Create and distribute plant labels.
  • Database entry and GIS mapping.
  • Assist research staff and visiting researchers.
  • Create/update/place interpretive materials related to the living collections.
  • Help plan, execute, and participate in a schedule of monthly intern field trips to area gardens and natural areas.
  • Create/update/place interpretive materials related to the living collections.
  • Other duties and assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Must have good communication skills - both written and oral
  • Knowledge of typical office computers programs including Excel, file sharing programs, ARGIS and relational databases preferred


Whomever is selected for this 9 month, part-time, internship should expect to work upwards of 40 hours per week depending on operational need.

This position will pay $15.00 an hour.
