Job Description Summary

The Assistant Director of Social Media will independently create and publish social media content to elevate brand visibility and reputation for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn Vet). The Assistant Director will be responsible for using creative and innovative methods to tell news stories across multiple platforms (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Vimeo, Facebook, etc.) including Penn Vet's website. The position reports to the Communications Director and works across multiple departments and external partners to elevate the School's objectives, goals, and strategic priorities. The award-winning Communications unit is embedded within Penn Vet's Institutional Advancement Division. This role will contribute to the fundraising efforts of Penn Vet.

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Social Media responsibilities will include.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement social media content - aligned with Penn Vet's mission, strategic priorities, and goals - that increases followership and drives engagement.
  • Seize on existing news cycles, identifying opportunities to promote Penn Vet's faculty, the School's hospital, clinical and diagnostic capabilities, as well as Penn Vet's impact within the agricultural and wildlife health sectors; amplify Penn Vet's talented, accomplished, and active student and alumni communities.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to convey the client experience; and student leaders/ambassadors to capture the learning/student life experience; create content; experiment with new content formats (e.g., live video, Instagram stories/reels).
  • A key member of the team shaping the Dean's social media voice, visibility, and reputational footprint to advance institutional goals; participate in goal setting, planning, execution, benchmarking, and fine-tuning of Dean's social media use over time.
  • Support faculty with establishing/expanding their professional social media presence to amplify School-oriented news and content.
  • Develop and steward relationships with students, clinicians, faculty, and staff to identify news for content including multi-media features, short stories, and events coverage.
  • Independently oversee the day-to-day management of existing social media accounts and content adaptation for different platforms; monitor, analyze and report on social media performance; lead social media listening and audience management.
  • Take an omni-channel approach to define cascading deployment of integrated and innovative communications/marketing campaigns.
  • Work with colleagues to execute editorial strategies, packages, and best practices for the display and distribution of content.


QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree is required and three-to-five years of work experience in digital or social media, marketing communications, public relations or journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Collaborative, creative, deadline-driven, and a strong client service orientation. Sensitivity to context and nuance, and a proven skillset navigating diverse and multi-faceted audience segments/targets. Ability to think independently, work through ambiguity, and respond to multiple demands. Final candidates will be required to submit samples/online portfolio of their social media work. A cover letter is also required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Deep interest in, or knowledge of, the veterinary health sector including topics such as companion animal health and welfare, the equine sector, agriculture, global health, and veterinary science. Experience in science or research communications within an academic healthcare institution. Two or more years overseeing large institutional/organizational social media accounts with a demonstrated track record of increasing growth, driving engagement, and delivering quantifiable impact. Experience with paid social media advertising and ad manager platforms. Demonstrated ability to write captivating copy and orchestrate inventive digital and social media campaigns. Expertise in photography, video editing, or graphic design.
