School of Veterinary Medicine - Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Nov 22, 2021
Deadline:

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine invites applications for an Associated Faculty position in Clinical Small Animal Radiation Oncology. This position is in the Academic Clinician (AC) track of the University of Pennsylvania and at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on the candidate's experience.

Faculty in the AC track are primarily devoted to clinics (42 weeks per year) and teaching (clinical and didactic). Developing or maintaining a primary research program is not a focus of the AC track, and therefore is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion. AC faculty members may participate in clinical research projects primarily managed by other investigators. AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years; promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is possible, if desired. Both reappointment and promotion require the faculty member to meet expectations for excellence in clinical activity, teaching, demonstration of an area of concentration in which the faculty member is considered subject matter expert, and sustained professionalism.

For this position, the successful candidate will join Penn Vet's existing Radiation Oncology service, which includes a Full Professor of Radiation Oncology in the AC track, one dedicated nurse-anesthetist, one Certified Veterinary Technician/service coordinator, and one registered technologist in Radiation Therapy. The successful candidate's time will be devoted primarily to clinical service in small animal radiation oncology. The remaining time will be dedicated to study for Board preparation (if needed), citizenship to the Department, clinical and didactic teaching, and professional development. Advantages of the position include a Comprehensive Oncology service with dedicated medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists working as a team, a dynamic hospital setting with a diverse, complex caseload, and excellent support staff. Penn Vet is an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and senior clinicians including faculty boarded in oncology, surgery, radiology, anesthesia, and clinical pathology. Facilities include a Varian Silhouette with RapidArc, OBI/CBCT, Eclipse TPS, and Aria R&V. Dedicated medical physics support is provided through the University of Pennsylvania's healthcare system. Imaging modalities include a 16-slice CT and 1.5T MRI. The proximity to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine provides ample opportunities for collaboration and consultation for unusual cases or research opportunities.

This position is particularly suited for junior applicants transitioning from residency who want to step into practice, as well as junior faculty looking to build and grow a program in a multi-specialty Academic referral center with a high caseload. The Comprehensive Oncology program is ideally positioned to offer outstanding oncology services and participate in multiple oncology clinical trials supported by the Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center ( https://www.vet.upenn.edu/research/clinical-trials-vcic/about-the-vcic ), the Penn Vet Cancer Center ( https://www.vet.upenn.edu/research/centers-laboratories/center/penn-vet-cancer-center ), as well as a full-time faculty member dedicated to Oncology Clinical trials. The Ryan Veterinary Hospital at Penn Vet is located in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theatres, and fine dining ( www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia ), with easy access to New York and Washington, DC. Additionally, for outdoor enthusiasts, Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge National Park, and many more recreational amenities are within minutes of the city and are easily accessible by bicycle and public transportation.
