He/she ensures adherence to technical, quality assistance, data integrity and security standards. May also be required to plan, organize and manage small projects.

Job Description

The Eukaryotic Pathogen, Vector and Host Informatics Resource ( VEuPathDB.org ) is a large, multi-institution project that develops scientific data-mining websites used by researchers worldwide to study selected vector, microbial pathogen such as those responsible for malaria and enteric disease and fungi. VEuPathDB models and presents genomic, post-genomic, systems biological and clinical epidemiology studies in intuitive, data-mining interfaces.

Duties:

We seek a biologist/epidemiologist/statistician with experience in bioinformatics/computer programming or a computer scientist with experience in bioinformatics/epidemiology to join an established team of 30+ developers and biologists to develop and maintain VEuPathDB.org, a set of highly-visible websites that integrate diverse genomic datasets relevant to global infectious disease biology. The VEuPathDB websites are important for clinicians and researchers and will include a new application which allows clinical and public health researchers to explore and analyze clinical and epidemiological data, particularly data related to enteric pathogen disease.

The successful candidate will interface with scientists to acquire epidemiological and omics datasets, build tools to load these data into a relational database (gusdb.org), and integrate data into VEuPathDB websites. This candidate will work collaboratively with biologists and software developers to translate requirements generated by the clinical and scientific user communities into effective data representations and WEB interfaces / applications using appropriate statistical and algorithmic approaches. This candidate should have experience working collaboratively within a Linux environment (e.g., git) and is expected to be proficient in a scripting language (Perl or Python). Candidates with experience in SQL, R, Nextflow, Groovy, Docker, or web development are strongly preferred. Participation in the preparation of scientific papers and technical documentation and attendance at scientific meetings is encouraged. Note that this candidate will join a long-standing project that is spread across multiple performance sites. The successful candidate will be based either at the University of Georgia or the University of Pennsylvania.

Senior Level:

A Senior level hire is expected to provide leadership and responsibility for projects including mentoring others.

Qualifications

JUNIOR LEVEL: BS in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 2-3 yr relevant work experience required. An active

interest in and experience with bioinformatics and biostatistics applications are required, and experience in genomics or epidemiology is a strong plus. Working knowledge of and experience with UNIX, R and a scripting language such as Perl or Python are all highly desirable. An active interest in web programming (JSP, CSS and javascript) is desirable, and experience a strong plus.

The salary for this level is expected to be from $42,953 to $78,194.

SENIOR LEVEL: BS (Masters or PhD highly preferred) in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or related field and 3-4 (5-6 highly preferred) yr relevant work experience required. An active interest in and experience with bioinformatics and biostatistics applications are required, and experience in genomics or epidemiology is a strong plus. Working knowledge of and experience with UNIX, R and a scripting language such as Perl or Python are all highly desirable. An active interest in web programming (JSP, CSS and javascript) is desirable, and experience a strong plus.

The salary for this level is expected to be from $59,703 to $114,270.
