Health Informatics Internship Coordinator, Term Faculty

The George Mason University Department of Health Administration within the College of Health and Human Services is launching an open-rank search for a term (non-tenure track) instructional faculty in health informatics.

About the Position:

The candidate will be part of health informatics program that offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in health informatics. Growth of the health informatics programs and our commitment to offering field-based internships in undergraduate and graduate programs has created the need for a unified approach to internship planning, coordination and placement, along with teaching of specialized health informatics related technical courses across curriculum.

Strong candidates with expertise in other disciplines or areas of expertise in health informatics will also be considered. This is a state-funded, full-time (12-month) instructional (non-tenure-track) faculty position. The appointment will begin in August for Academic Year 2022-2023.

 

Responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be expected to:

Teach technical and non-technical courses across the department’s health informatics curriculum, focused on specialized health informatics topics;

Coordinate internship and practicum experiences across undergraduate and graduate programs in health informatics. This includes maintaining industry and academic contacts for student placements, coordinating internship agreements, and securing new contacts;

Provide academic and professional advising to graduate students;

Participate in student and faculty recruitment and academic program outreach activities; and

Serve on Department, College and University level faculty committees and working groups.

 

Required Qualifications:

Earned Master’s Degree in health, informatics, information technology, computer science or related field, or other relevant advanced degree such as MD or PharmD. Note that only candidates with doctoral degrees will be able to teach in graduate programs;

Experience in teaching technical and non-technical courses across undergraduate and graduate programs;

Wide network of contacts for possible internship placements, through active participation in professional organizations, and active professional service; and Strong interpersonal communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in health informatics, biomedical informatics, information technology, computer science or related field. Note that only candidates with doctoral degrees will be able to teach in graduate programs;

Experience in arranging student internships on undergraduate and graduate level through wide network of industry contacts; and

Active membership in AMIA, AUPHA, ACHE, HIMSS or other relevant professional societies.

 

About the Health Informatics Program:

Health Informatics Program at George Mason University offers newly approved Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics (the first public university in Virginia to offer such program), along with Master of Science in Health Informatics (accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Programs, CAHIIM), PhD in Health Services Research (concentration in Discovery Science and Health Informatics), Health Informatics and Data Analytics graduate certificate and an undergraduate minor in Health IT. About the College of Health and Human Services:

The College of Health and Human Services is located in the Peterson Family Health Science Hall, which has 165,000 square feet of offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and wet and dry labs. The College has accredited degree programs in Global and Community Health, Health Administration and Policy, Nutrition and Food Studies, Nursing, and Social Work, including CEPH accredited bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The College’s research infrastructure includes DSHI (Discovery Science and Health Informatics Center with a Machine Learning Lab), imaging resources (DEXA, fMRI, movement capture), as well as physical and metabolic human assessment tools. The College operates a Population Health Center that supports primary and behavioral health care, research, and training.
