Speech Instructor Faculty

CalArts School of Theater, one of the foremost performance programs in the world, is seeking a dynamic Speech Instructor for a full-time faculty position to begin in the Fall of 2022.

Dedicated to the development of new voices and new forms, the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) School of Theater is one of the preeminent theater training programs in the country. Joining one of the premiere faculties in the nation, the position includes teaching métier (major) BFA and MFA Speech courses, mentoring both BFA and MFA theater students in their professional and artistic goals, advising students involved in Theater School projects, and being part of a collaborative faculty with experimental and cross-disciplinary impulses dedicated to fostering programmatic growth in this area. The position also includes, annual recruitment duties, service on committees, and administrative responsibilities. The ideal candidate is a practicing professional with a firm commitment to teaching, a dedication to working with a culturally, economically and intellectually diverse community of artists, and an appreciation for the ever-expanding demands of speaking effectively in the complex arena of 21st century performance.

Responsibilities Include:

● Class preparation and grading;

● 12 hours per week of classroom instruction;

● Significant student mentoring;

● Attending performance faculty and full faculty meetings as scheduled throughout the year;

● Participating in students’ reviews each semester and providing written evaluations, mentor reports, and reviews for each of the students;

● Coaching at least two curricular productions per year; and

● Various other duties, as assigned by the Program Director and Dean’s Office.


Mentorship of students is the cornerstone of the CalArts School of Theater. Even though each student is assigned to one specific mentor, it is the responsibility of the faculty to advise any student in the School of Theater if they have the knowledge or expertise that the student requires. Speech faculty will be assigned both BFA and MFA students to mentor.


Qualifications include:

• A teacher with demonstrable professional experience and with significant, evidenced associations and proficiency in current industry practices (stage, screen, television, etc). The successful candidate will exhibit a strong record of accomplishment and enjoy an ongoing career in their field of expertise.

• Evidenced experience teaching at the college level or in an equivalent pedagogical setting is preferred.

• Candidates with MFA degree or equivalent professional experience are encouraged to apply and will be seriously considered.

• Skills traditionally associated with excellent speech instruction (IPA and associated pedagogies, dialect and accent training, text work, classical to contemporary and related vocal techniques).
