Director of Recruitment for College of Visual & Performing Arts

James Madison University (JMU) is seeking applicants for the Director of Recruitment, College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). This position is a 12-month appointment that will begin January 1, 2022 or as soon as possible, as Administrative and Professional Faculty. The Director of Recruitment will work collaboratively and inclusively with the CVPA Dean, faculty, and staff to promote the goals of the schools, college, and university through undergraduate recruitment. We are looking for leadership candidates who represent and support diverse perspectives and who can contribute to a college committed to social justice through work that is transformational, inclusive, sustainable, and equitable.


 

The CVPA Director of Recruitment is a visionary thinker with strong interpersonal skills who facilitates undergraduate recruitment across three schools (the School of Art, Design, and Art History, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre and Dance).  This includes a proven ability to coordinate and facilitate in-person and virtual recruiting events including campus visits, portfolio reviews and auditions, college fairs, high school arts classroom visits, and the college’s participation in Undergraduate Admission events.  The CVPA Director of Recruitment must be able to work with the dean, school directors, and faculty to design and implement recruitment materials and create a marketing, communication, and social media strategy on a nationwide scale for prospective students.  The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to manage CVPA CRM functions, assisting in scheduling visits (both in-person and virtual), managing arts supplementary materials, updating websites, and offering coordination of system-wide functionality.


 

The College of Visual and Performing Arts brings together the Schools of Art, Design and Art History; Music; Theatre and Dance; and three interdisciplinary programs, The Institute for Creative Inquiry, the Center for Inclusive Music Engagement, and The Madison Art Collection. With over 100 full-time faculty and 1,200 majors, the College of Visual and Performing Arts comprises a vibrant and collaborative artistic community.

Duties and Responsibilities


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:    

  •  Provide visionary leadership that will support opportunities to expand programs and recognition for all of the schools in the college;
  • Promote diversity in all its forms in the prospective and matriculated student body as well as in programming and outreach;
  • Build on the CVPA recruitment and brand identity (nationally and internationally) with a clear and proactive strategy that will make the schools in CVPA stand out from other institutions;
  • Maintain and improve efficiencies and data information to better inform decision-making;
  • Facilitate consensus-building and transparent decision-making that best advances the mission of the program;
  • Foster a collaborative culture based on open communication with faculty, staff, deans, students, alumni, and University administration;
  • Oversee the budget and management of recruitment-related resources;
  • Assess the needs of the CVPA recruitment strategies as they relate to JMU’s mission and strategic plan;
  • Coordinate, partner, and collaborate with the JMU Office of Admissions. 

 

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or master’s degree in a relevant field and a passion for the visual and performing arts;
  • Record of integrating and amplifying Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion efforts in undergraduate recruitment;
  • Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, programming, recruitment, and managing multiple different systems such as Full Measure, GetAcceptd, Slate, and SlideRoom;
  • Record of strong leadership and coordination across schools or other areas utilizing social media and other events to improve and strengthen matriculation rates; 
  • Experience in generating and analyzing statistical data to help identify areas of strength and weakness in recruiting and to identify new prospect schools on the national scale in a recruitment strategy.
  • Proven ability to articulate to internal and external constituents the essential value of the arts; 
  • Ability to facilitate personal contact with prospective students and act as a liaison between students and faculty.
