Develops, coordinates and implements The Water Center at Penn's Programs and Applied Research agenda, based on agreed strategic water research priorities, funding strategies and grants secured. In conjunction with other Water Center staff, elevates urban water challenges as an area of study, research, collaboration, and innovation across the University.
Job Description
The Water Center at Penn provides integrated real-world solutions to critical urban water problems. We engage and connect the University community with regional water practitioners, decision makers, and national and global thought leaders for the purpose of developing integrated and innovative urban water strategies that address public health, infrastructure, and the socioeconomic and environmental challenges of long-term urban water sustainability and resiliency.
This position develops, coordinates and implements The Water Center at Penn's (“WCP”) Programs and Applied Research agenda, based on agreed strategic water research priorities, funding strategies and grants secured, with overall budget and client satisfaction responsibility in this area. Ensures that tenets of diversity, equity and environmental justice are incorporated in all projects, particularly with respect to rapidly increasing impacts of climate change. Engages in, and oversees staff engaged in outreach, technical assistance, and applied research in furtherance of the Programs and Applied Research agenda. In conjunction with other Water Center staff, elevates urban water challenges as an area of study, research, collaboration, and innovation across the University. Organizes and acts as a conduit for water-based research and programming across the University. Assembles and manages teams of faculty, students and non-University partners for participation in programs and applied research projects and secures funding to support those projects. Develops WCP as a thought leader around specific scientific water research topics and connects them to emerging critical needs in the water industry. Helps initiate, cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and funders across practitioner, philanthropic, government and academic communities. Manages, coordinates and writes grant proposals. Responsible for grant execution, report writing and compliance. Represents WCP at conferences, professional associations and other public venues. Works with Executive Director and director of Development to establish and facilitate the Faculty Advisory Board including membership, protocol, and semi-annual meetings and incorporates Board recommendations into WCP's strategic planning.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with 5 to 7 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Master's Degree in water/environment-related field or M.D., Ph.D., Law Degree or equivalent doctoral degree strongly preferred
- 7+ years experience managing large specialized project portfolios and multi-diciplinary teams of professionals preferred
- In-depth familiarity with regional, national, and international technical, regulatory, financial, and governance trends with respect to integrated water management
- Commitment to issues of water equity
- Financial acumen and experience managing budgeting, P&Ls, performance metrics and financial controls
- Proven success in building and managing successful organizations
- Ability to negotiate complex and difficult environments
- Willingness and ability to travel and work non-traditional hours as necessary
