Job Description Summary
The Center for Teaching and Learning seeks an Associate Director to contribute to all aspects of the center, working both independently and as part of a team to support teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. This position will take part in programming, including, but not limited to: organizing and leading discussions and workshops on teaching; consulting with instructors and observing classes; supporting specific teaching initiatives; and communicating with groups throughout Penn to develop and coordinate teaching programs. This position will support faculty in a variety of schools and disciplines, as well as contribute to programming for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Candidates should bring both the ability to engage with faculty and graduate students and an interest in research-informed practices. Candidate with expertise in one or more of the following areas are particularly welcome: active learning, teaching large classes, STEM teaching, evaluation of teaching. This position may also be eligible to teach one course a year at Penn. The Center for Teaching and Learning works to help instructors at every level at Penn excel in their teaching, to enhance the culture of teaching at the university, and, in turn, to increase the quality of education at Penn.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Assist director and work with other CTL staff and independently in planning, developing and implementing programs for the improvement of teaching.
  • Organize, lead and participate in teaching workshops and discussions.
  • Consult with individual instructors on teaching; observe classes and provide feedback.
  • Contribute to the CTL team's programs for graduate students.
  • Provide organizational and administrative support for the Center's activities. Communicate about Center's programs.
  • Work with assigned schools or departments to identify their teaching needs and to design programs to meet those needs.
  • Communicate across Penn - including with instructors, departments, administrators and resource centers - to coordinate support forteaching.
  • This position may also be eligible to teach one course a year at Penn


Qualifications: Ph.D. strongly preferred; Master's degree required, plus a minimum of 2-3 years related experience. Teaching experience at the college level. Experience in and ideas about teacher development. Ability to develop and administer teaching improvement programs. Ability to work with a variety of disciplines and teaching styles. Sensitivity to the personal issues related to faculty development and inclusive teaching. Excellent communication skills.
