Furman University, a preeminent private, undergraduate liberal arts and sciences university of 2,800 students in Greenville, S.C., seeks a strategic, judicious, imaginative and collaborative academic leader to serve as its next Dean of Faculty. There is a palpable sense on campus that Furman is an institution on the move. Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Dean will join a university with upward momentum and will lead the faculty as it continues to provide an unparalleled education that combines rigorous classroom learning with real-world experiences and self-discovery. This position is an opportunity for an experienced, driven, congenial, and innovative academic leader to join a highly collaborative community of faculty, staff, and administrators dedicated to challenging and supporting students as they progress through a residential undergraduate experience characterized by excellent classroom learning, high impact experiences, reflection, and mentorship. Furman University is well-poised to meet the changing needs of its current and future students as well as educating a more diverse student body who wish to have an impact on communities across the country and world. The next Dean will work with academic departments, faculty committees, and administrative offices to help develop and train faculty leaders, strengthen academic experiences and programs, align innovative new academic programs with expectations for faculty tenure and promotion, and grow a diverse faculty body that meets the needs of a changing student demographic.

In successfully executing her or his responsibilities, the Dean will evaluate departments and programs; supervise faculty development and retention activities; implement diversity and inclusiveness plans for Academic Affairs; manage faculty hiring requests; and work closely with the University’s Title IX Coordinator to both address campus climate issues that may arise, while also providing professional development opportunities for faculty. The Dean will facilitate faculty understanding of and engagement in The Furman Advantage , advocate for faculty needs and assist them in establishing priorities. This position is a part of the Provost’s very collaborative and collegial senior leadership team and will advise the Provost on faculty matters.
