Teaching Artist and Studio Full-Time Faculty Position (Assistant/Associate Professor) Fine Arts Dept

Job Description:

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) seeks a dedicated art educator/artist to lead and manage our nationally recognized Teaching Artist program, and teach within the studio program. MCAD’s Teaching Artist program provides students opportunities to develop a reflective teaching practice; research and apply historical and contemporary learning theory in their communities; develop best practices in an arts infused learning environment within a BFA degree; and, though not a licensure program, prepares them for work as teaching artists in the community through educational, non-profit community organizations, neighborhood associations, and other community settings. This position combines leadership and management of the Teaching Artist program and teaching classes in Theory/Methods, and a Practicum, including developing mentors and placement opportunities for students. The successful candidate will also teach 3 courses annually in a studio-based discipline within the Fine Arts department. Additional responsibilities include student advising, curriculum development, building and maintaining educational and community partners, building awareness of the program, and working with Institutional Advancement on grant development.

This position is full-time and begins August 2020. Full-time faculty teach three courses each semester or equivalent, and participate in committee work and other departmental and college activities required of ranked faculty. Full-time faculty are expected to maintain a studio or research practice. MCAD offers renewable, long-term contracts based on a clearly defined peer-review process. Rank will be commensurate with experience. This position is benefits eligible. This position reports to the chair of the Fine Arts Department. The successful candidate will be committed to differentiated instruction and effective teaching methods to reach all learners.

Qualifications:
  • Ability to inspire and motivate a diverse student population of artists, designers, and makers.
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations and/or engagement with diverse communities.
  • Practicing visual artist with established studio or community-based practice.
  • Teaching experience in both studio and art education preferred.
  • Established record of leadership and management skills.
  • Extensive knowledge and involvement in the growing Teaching Artist community and an ability to apply that knowledge locally in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and beyond.
  • Current knowledge in art education theories and applications from children to adults.
  • Ability to build and maintain community partnerships including, but not limited to, school settings.
  • Advanced degree in an applicable field (or professional equivalent).
  • Understanding of national granting opportunities for Teaching Artists.
