Associate Dean for Research

The College of Education at San Diego State University seeks an Associate/Full Professor for the role of Associate Dean for Research with the possibility of tenure upon entry. This is a full-time position divided equally between associate dean and faculty responsibilities.

Associate Dean for Research Responsibilities (50% appointment):

Leadership:

  • Provide effective and creative leadership and strategic vision to support and expand the research initiatives within the College of Education, capitalizing on current strengths and developing new areas of collaboration and innovation.
  • Work in partnership with the Vice President for Research, College faculty and administrators, and the College Research Committee in decisions and strategic planning that foster research productivity and impact, identify new research directions, and recommend research-related policies and priorities;
  • Recommend and facilitate activities that will stimulate and support a culture of high-quality research and scholarship within the College;
  • Nurture an environment for inquiry, innovation, imagination, and collegiality.

Mentorship:

  • Identify and coordinate mentorship and capacity-building opportunities related to research and scholarship for faculty at all ranks (in collaboration with the College’s Faculty Mentoring Coordinator);
  • Develop strategies and mechanisms to provide support for identified faculty needs (e.g., editorial assistance, research design, data analysis, statistical consultation, dissemination, obtaining research funding, and grant writing and management expertise);
  • Assist faculty to employ diverse strategies for knowledge generation, dissemination, and implementation.
  • Develop strategies and programs in partnership with faculty to support student involvement in research and scholarship.

Advocacy/Relationship Building:

  • Build and strengthen research relationships within and across departments and colleges at SDSU and with alumni, professional organizations, and other relevant groups;
  • Collaborate with University leaders to expand the research infrastructure at SDSU and in the College of Education necessary for faculty to thrive as scholars;
  • Foster and maintain strategic relationships with local and national funding sources;
  • Serve as a liaison to promote compliance with research-related policies and regulations, including IRB;
  • Advocate for research resources for the College and support the implementation of research initiatives of the University.

Faculty Responsibilities (50% appointment)

The individual in this position will hold a half-time faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor in one of the departments in the College of Education. The responsibilities for this portion of the appointment may include:

  • maintaining an active research program,
  • teaching undergraduate, credential, and/or graduate courses,
  • providing service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited university in a field appropriate for tenure in one of the departments in the College
  • Experience as a tenured university faculty member
  • Evidence of research and scholarship at the level of an associate or full professor
  • Experience in the design and implementation of grants and revenue-generating initiatives
  • Strong track record of successful grant writing and procurement
  • Experience and interest in mentoring and supporting faculty research development
  • Commitment to a social justice agenda and ability to work with diverse populations
  • Proven track-record of valuing multiple types of approaches, research paradigms, varied methodologies (e.g., qualitative and quantitative), and community-engaged scholarship
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent teaching skills
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent oral and written skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Administrative and leadership experience in higher education
  • Institutional Review Board experience
  • Experience as a grant reviewer

The faculty is active in research and scholarship and received $26.3 million (of the university’s $148.5 million) last year in external funding. Compensation/Expected Start Date: Compensation is competitive and based upon qualifications and experience. Expected starting date is August 23, 2020.
