The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Software Analyst, QA for the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. This is a full-time, non-tenured, administrative position. The main responsibilities of this position are to develop, maintain, and improve new and existing software to monitor the state of the hardware, software systems, and data products that make up NSL's end-to-end sensor networks and data delivery systems. The Software Analyst will coordinate within a network operations group consisting of network and software engineers, field technicians, and project managers to help ensure operational excellence of instrumentation for environmental monitoring. He/she will also be responsible for utilizing these monitoring tools to help the group maintain awareness of the quality and availability of the systems and data acquired and processed at remote sites. Secondarily, the incumbent will collaborate with lab personnel to understand and provide assistance in other technical areas of lab operations, including data acquisition systems, systems administration, systems analysis, and networking. The Software Analyst will monitor hardware and software systems by collecting and analyzing metrics from the data center to determine availability and consistency of data. This requires writing, testing and debugging computer programming language.
Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related work experience including: Experience in programming and scripting, reading and writing time-series data to/from a relational database and parsing of log or other data files to extract needed information.
Master's Degree and one (1) year of related work experience.
Certification and Licensure:
NV driver’s license
Schedule or Travel Requirements
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. Occasional travel may be required.
Experience writing and/or maintaining computer programs that gather real-time data
Basic familiarity with data structures, serialization, databases
Experience installing and configuring software in a Linux environment

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory www.seismo.unr.edu is a research division within the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Laboratory has overall responsibility for instrumental studies of earthquakes in the Nevada region. The laboratory operates a statewide network of seismographic stations and investigates the sizes, frequencies of occurrence, and distribution of earthquakes in the region, and other problems related to seismic risk in Nevada.The Laboratory disseminates seismic information to the public and regularly publishes research results. It serves as a data repository and a resource for the public on matters related to earthquake activity and earthquake risks in Nevada and adjoining states. The laboratory also handles grant- and contract-supported research on seismic problems of national and international importance, and interacts closely with the University of Nevada Reno Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering to prepare well-educated professionals for careers in seismology.
