Director of the National Resource Center

The University of South Carolina (USC) is seeking an innovative, energetic, and experienced academic leader to serve as the Director of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition (NRC). The NRC serves as the trusted expert, internationally recognized leader, and clearinghouse for scholarship, policy, and best practice for all postsecondary student transitions. The Center’s mission is to support and advance efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and through higher education, and carries out the mission by providing opportunities for the exchange of practical, theory-based information and ideas through the convening of conferences, institutes, and workshops; publishing books, monographs, guides, newsletters, and a peer-reviewed journal; generating and supporting research and scholarship; hosting visiting scholars; and providing a robust suite of electronic resources.

The Director is responsible for all operational aspects of the Center and will:

• Engage with national, international, and institutional thought leaders to identify emerging trends and issues in higher education to ensure that the Center’s current activities remain relevant and to gain ideas for future efforts.
• Engage in research, scholarship, and professional development at the local, national, and international level.
• Work collaboratively with staff to secure extramural funding and internal partnerships.
• Serve as liaison to the Center’s constituents such as members of the Center’s network, Advisory Board members, Fellows, visiting scholars, university partners, and other national organizations/associations.
• Engage in service to the university and to the higher education community through committee work, providing institutional support and expertise to university practitioners, participation in review and editorial boards, and other organizations, institutions, and associations dedicated to the mission, vision, and core commitments of the University of South Carolina, the Division of Student Affairs, the Student Success Unit, and University 101 Programs and National Resource Center.

Preferred credentials for candidates applying for this position are an earned doctorate, knowledge of the first-year experience movement and other student transition issues, and significant experience with national/international level collaborations in higher education, continuing professional development planning, research, and publishing. Experience garnering and administering grants and dynamic public speaking skills are also indicators of competitive candidates.

The successful candidate will join a talented and experienced department whose work has significant impact on faculty, staff, and students across the country, around the world and at USC. The director will hold a key professional position at the University of South Carolina, a Research I state flagship campus known for its outstanding first-year and undergraduate experience.
