Position Description and Duties

ABOUT JOHN JAY COLLEGE

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. John Jay is laser-focused on fueling the success of our exceptional student scholars pursuing a justice-focused education. Led by President Karol V. Mason, John Jay is a federally designated Hispanic-serving institution, it is ranked third in the nation in Black student success, and it is a top ten institution for promoting student social mobility. John Jay is proud to serve a diverse and dynamic student body of 15,000 students, nearly fifty percent of whom are first in their family to attend college, and many of them are immigrants or children of immigrants.

The College participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate Center of CUNY and offers bachelor's and master's degrees both in traditional criminal justice-related fields of study as well as in a robust portfolio of liberal arts and sciences programs that highlight themes of justice across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. POSITION OVERVIEW

As an essential leader at John Jay College who reports to the President, the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost:

• serves as a member of the President's senior leadership team.

• enhances the College 's academic and research reputation, impact and reach by providing strategic leadership and academic direction in accordance with the mission of the College and the University.

• is deeply engaged in the development, evaluation, and implementation of College policy; the advancement of the College’s strategic priorities and planning; and programmatic accreditation efforts.

• directly supervises administrators, deans, department chairs and academic program directors and helps to set goals and priorities for their respective areas.

POSITION DETAILS

The Provost works to increase support and advance institutional priorities for faculty, staff, and student success. Among these priorities are faculty research, new pedagogical modalities, student scholarships, internships, experiential learning opportunities, online learning, and global engagement. The Provost will lead efforts to recruit, develop, and support talented, diverse, and inclusive faculty. This executive will develop innovative academic programming and partnerships to support enrollment efforts of our diverse and engaged student population. The Provost’s responsibilities lie within three major areas:

Advancing Excellence in Faculty Teaching, Research and Scholarship

The Provost is responsible for building the academic reputation, increasing the impact, and expanding the reach of the College by providing strategic leadership and academic direction consistent with the missions of the College and the University, the President's guidance, and institutional priorities, all with a strong commitment to shared governance and best practices in higher education to make certain that teaching, research and creative activity meet the highest academic standards. The Provost ensures that high quality academic programs, both classroom-based and online, are developed and supported; talented, diverse and forward-looking faculty are recruited, developed and retained; financial and physical resources are efficiently managed; and innovative approaches are adopted to improve institutional outcomes. Included is the responsibility for the College’s Lloyd Sealy Library and the library’s faculty. The Provost supports collaborative efforts between the College and its principal community college partners and K-12 schools and seeks opportunities for academic collaborations across the University, in New York City and surrounding communities, as well as internationally. The Provost collaborates closely with the College’s Department of Information Technology and the Department of Online Education Support to provide current, flexible, appropriate direction, support and oversight of multimodal teaching and learning.

Improving Student Success

The Provost is tasked with developing and supporting a strategic alignment of academic affairs, enrollment management and student affairs to design, develop, and implement programs and practices that will result in increased numbers of graduates who are fully prepared to begin successful careers, pursue advanced studies, and assume leadership roles after graduation. The Provost is a key leader of the College's efforts to solidify its place as an intellectual, educational, and cultural anchor in educating for justice.

Achieving Greater Academic and Institutional Effectiveness

Working closely with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the Provost is fully involved in institutional and programmatic accreditation efforts, and in formulating and articulating clear goals for department chairs, academic program directors and administrators regarding instruction-related planning and cross-divisional operational matters.

The Provost collaborates with the University's chancellery and the College's President, vice-presidents, deans, chairs, program directors, and faculty in strategic planning to increase public and private support for faculty research, scholarships, internships, experiential learning opportunities, new pedagogical modalities, online learning, global engagement, and other institutional priorities

Qualification Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Positions in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate for the position of Provost will have an earned doctorate or other terminal degree and a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly achievement at a level meriting appointment as a full professor in one of the College's academic departments. The successful candidate will have at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in academic higher education leadership; experience in a large public institution is highly desirable.

The next Provost will be demonstrably passionate about the academic mission, core values, and future of John Jay College and CUNY, and will have demonstrated success in strategic planning and effectiveness in working in a multicultural environment and promoting equity.

Also essential is a leadership style that is collaborative, transparent, empowering, inclusive, and innovative; a career track that demonstrates passion and dedication to the pursuit of academic excellence; leadership effectiveness in fiscal planning and resource allocation, strategic planning and execution, organizational development, and other administrative and academic functions related to higher education; and a demonstrated commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive environment conducive to faculty, student, and staff success. The successful candidate will be a strong proponent of data-informed decision­ making, continuous improvement, and faculty and student success. The ability to work collaboratively and collegially within a shared governance and collective bargaining environment with faculty, staff, administrators and students within the College and stakeholders beyond the campus while fostering a strong esprit de corps is essential. The successful candidate must be able to communicate regularly and effectively with the President.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary: $250,000 - $290,000
