Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry

Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2024. Candidates with expertise in any area of chemistry are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduates and a strong independent research program that can contribute to our undergraduate research activities, which include summer research and senior thesis. A Ph.D. is required and postdoctoral research experience is desirable.

Harvey Mudd College is a liberal arts college of science, engineering and mathematics located in Claremont, CA, which is approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. The Department of Chemistry at Harvey Mudd College has been recognized as a leader in teaching, research, undergraduate research mentoring, and educational outreach. The teaching load is five courses per year. All faculty at Harvey Mudd College contribute to the college’s Core Curriculum, which includes disciplinary introductory courses, a first-year course in writing, and a course centered on the relationship between science and society. b. What have you done to assess and improve your teaching, and what do you plan in the future?
c. What is your experience or approach to teaching a student body with diverse backgrounds or needs?

5. A statement that addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion in the chemical sciences (typically 1-2 pages).
a. What are your interests, experiences, and future plans for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the chemical sciences?
b. How will your classroom and/or research program promote a sense of belonging among students who may be underrepresented in chemistry?
c. What is your approach to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds?

6. Three letters of recommendation. At least one letter should specifically address teaching.

The 9-month salary range for this position is $95,000 - $110,000.
