Assistant Professor in Residence -

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment in the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources (CAHNR) at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Environmental Sciences and Studies with specific expertise in undergraduate course instruction.

The successful applicant will instruct 5-6 undergraduate courses per academic year and advise undergraduate students in the areas of environmental sciences and studies in support of the Environmental Literacy competency in the General Education curriculum and the cross-college interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies majors , respectively. Potential course assignments include cohort and team-building courses designed for majors, upper-division courses with a science writing emphasis, and moderate-sized introductory courses in environmental science and studies intended for diverse audiences.

Successful candidates will be expected to promote a sense of community for all students through the incorporation of interactive and inclusive teaching strategies. Scholarship in teaching and learning is expected and candidates well-versed in teaching pedagogies, course design, and learning outcomes evaluation are encouraged to apply.

The College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources has developed and implemented a Strategic Vision to guide the development and focus of our teaching, research, and extension programs in the years 2020-2025. Faculty hired for this position will be expected to make significant contributions in their area of expertise, contributing to the advancement of one or more of the CAHNR’s four strategic priorities.

While this position does not require summer teaching, it is possible to offer additional courses during the summer (with compensation). In addition to teaching and advising, the successful candidate will perform service to the Department, University, and in particular the cross-college faculty advisory boards of the Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies majors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A doctoral degree at the time of appointment in environmental science, environmental studies, or a related discipline. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
  • Experience in college-level instruction.
  • Experience with online educational technologies and course management systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in college instruction.
  • Training and workshop attendance for teaching and learning pedagogical activities.
  • Previous advisement/mentoring of undergraduate students.
  • Published scholarship in teaching and learning.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Professor in Residence position. The position is considered 95% teaching (instruction and advising) and 5% service. The position is annually renewable during an initial period and becomes eligible for multi-year contracts thereafter. The successful candidate will work at the University of Connecticut’s main campus located in Storrs. The anticipated start date is August 23, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
