Learning From Children - Part-time Lecturer

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Aug 02, 2022
Deadline:

Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program offers this undergraduate course in the fall term for undergraduate students. We seek an instructor to teach this course in the fall 2022 term.

This course is about developing skills of observation, reflection, and analysis, which will help students learn from children. For 10 weeks of the semester students will spend at least two hours per week in an early elementary classroom. Students will record observations and reflections in a notebook and the instructor will discuss in class various strategies for looking, listening, and learning in classrooms.

Throughout the semester, students will look through various theoretical and methodological lenses to help interpret children's educational experiences. Students will experiment with techniques and approaches to observing children and collecting data in classrooms. In turn, the knowledge gathered by looking closely at children will itself be a lens for looking at bigger issues in the field of education.

This position is part-time and non-tenure-track and involves in-person teaching; pay is competitive.

The Urban Teaching Apprenticeship master's program is a practice-focused program that prepares new teachers to enact student-centered learning and to use innovative teaching tools in urban schools, premised on the belief that children are curious, creative, and competent. Coursework and intensive field experiences build on content expertise and support the development of pedagogical content knowledge. Teachers leave the program inspired to use the power of teaching to deepen student learning, transform schools, and increase educational equity.
