Responsibilities include proposal writing, leadership communications, editing, publications, production of VIP acknowledgements, and recognition/cultivation/stewardship events remarks and support. The Senior Director will also serve as the communications liaison to the Alumni Development & Alumni Relations team, the Planned Giving Team and the Annual Giving Team, as well as the Biomedical Research Development team. In this role, the Senior Director will provide critically important support and help elevate awareness about emerging research priorities at Penn Medicine.

The Senior Director will represent the Penn Medicine Development communications team at meetings with colleagues and faculty, including department and center/institute leadership, etc. Provides leadership and support on proposals, stewardship writing and special projects to execute the goals of the PMDAR. Serves the Abramson Cancer Center (ACC) and University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) teams in a supporting capacity as a strategic contributor and as a primary point person for the key research priorities, biomedical research, and emerging initiatives across the Perelman School of Medicine and the health system.

Remarkable project management skills and creativity will enable the Senior Director to handle multiple assignments at once, including the execution of priority projects, such as acknowledgment letters, special projects, stewardship reports, one pagers, articles, gift proposals, and updates related to all gift funds, including scholarship funds, prize funds, research funds, and endowed professorships. A key contributor to our highly collaborative department, the Senior Director offers proven team-building skills and an active interest in innovative practices and solutions that improve our work. Continuously maintains the strategic priorities of the team as the channels, volumes and diversity of communications made available to PMDAR constituents increases.

Specific Responsibilities:

Develops an understanding of the educational, research, clinical and financial needs and goals of the University of Pennsylvania, the Perelman School of Medicine, Penn Medicine and its affiliates (Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Lancaster General Health, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton HealthCare System).

Works as senior member of a maturing, dynamic communications development team.

Provides leadership and insights as a communications professional with a specialized understanding of complex scientific research, and the ability to translate that research for a non-scientific audience.

Provides support for the Biomedical Research Development team, the Alumni Development & Alumni Relations team, the Planned Giving team, and the Annual Giving team.

Contributes to leadership communications developed on behalf the dean, the CEO of Penn Medicine and other faculty leaders.

Working with the Director of Stewardship, assist with management of the stewardship pipeline, communications projects, and specialty or special events.

Proactively identify areas and new opportunities for impactful story telling via development activity to increase targeted communications, recognition and promotion with key stakeholders, staff, faculty community and patient prospects.

Collaborates with University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine leadership

and development colleagues on all matters regarding assigned prospects and

ACC/UPHS development communications.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of progressively responsible professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience in higher education, institutional development or related field and knowledge of development, alumni relations and communications methods and techniques preferred.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Solid computer skills required, e.g. familiarity with web sites, internet, word processing, Power Point, Excel and prospect management databases, etc.

Ability to function independently, but collaboratively, as part of a goal-oriented team.

Strong administrative experience, project management, the ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising goals.
