The Opportunity

SUNY Upstate Medical University is seeking an accomplished, strategic thinking physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Medicine. SUNY Upstate, the only academic medical center in central New York State, serves more than 1.8 million people across a region stretching north to Canada, and south to Pennsylvania. Beyond the tertiary teaching hubs of Upstate University Hospitals in Syracuse, Upstate provides clinical care through satellite sites and the use of telemedicine to meet the care needs of rural communities across the Central New York region. With more than 11,000 employees, Upstate is the region’s largest employer and is an economic driver for Central New York.

The Organization

SUNY Upstate Medical University is one of five academic medical centers of the State University of New York. SUNY Upstate has an annual budget of more than $1.8B. More than 9,500 people work at SUNY Upstate, which is the largest employer in Central New York. Each year, SUNY Upstate educates nearly 1,600 students in more than 30 highly specialized upper division and graduate programs (including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Graduate Studies, and Health Professions) and provides graduate medical education to approximately 700 residents and fellows. As a clinical system, SUNY Upstate sees patients at its two hospital campuses and through an extensive network of outpatient sites. There are 19 clinical departments, five basic science departments, and two academic departments. SUNY Upstate conducts over $40 million in annual funded research dedicated to improving human health.

The Department

The Department has approximately 140 fulltime faculty and comprises 11 clinical divisions. The Department of Medicine is the largest department at SUNY Upstate and includes a quarter of the entire fulltime faculty in the College of Medicine. Most of the inpatient care is provided at Upstate University Hospital and approximately 76% of the ambulatory care is in provider-based hospital clinics.

The Position

The Chair, Department of Medicine is the academic, clinical, and administrative leader of the Department of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University. With the support of the Dean, the Chair has the opportunity to build a nationally recognized program in medicine through the recruitment, retention, and development of approximately 140 full-time faculty with primary appointments in the Department of Medicine. The Chair of Medicine leads and directs programmatic, clinical, research and educational development within the Department. The following clinical divisions are included in the Department of Medicine: Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Gastroenterology, General Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Pulmonary Medicine, Rheumatology, and Hospital Medicine.
