One post-doctoral position is available in the Holliday lab in theDepartment of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania. This position is linked to a project funded by the Spencer Foundation (‘"Don't Take That Tone With Me": Linguistic Variation and Disciplinary Action on African American Children in Schools') awarded to Drs. Nicole Holliday (Penn) and Sabriya Fisher (Wellesley). This project investigates the link between use of prosodic, phonological and morphosyntactic features of African American English (AAE), and experiences of school discipline. The postdoctoral researcher will take a leading role in designing and conducting experimental work, conducting data analysis, and managing a team of research assistants in both Philadelphia and Boston.

A PhD in Linguistics or a related field is required. Applicants should have training and experience with quantitative variationist sociolinguistic research. Required skills include familiarity with R and modern statistical methods in the social sciences, as well as a scholarly understanding of African American English in Black communities. Applicants should also have experience with analysis of phonetic variables, and knowledge of methods for prosodic analysis is preferred.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Department. The researcher is also expected to contribute to the vibrant interdisciplinary group of cognitive scientists at Penn that includes faculty, postdocs and students in Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Philosophy, Education and related disciplines. The position is available in late Summer/early Fall 2022 (start date flexible) and is for an initial period of one year with potential extension for an additional year. The position is open to U.S. citizens and those authorized to work in the U.S.
