OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, the Associate Director oversees the development, administration, and evaluation of programs which support University of Pennsylvania students' engagement with community organizations in Philadelphia and beyond. The Associate Director will assist in creating social justice educational programming, communicating with community partners and University colleagues, promoting community engagement among Penn students, advising students, and office administration. During the academic year, position requires availability during several evenings and occasional weekends.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Civic House Educational and Training Programs

Working individually and in collaboration with other Civic House staff members, the Associate Director will identify, organize, manage, and facilitate social justice educational opportunities that guide students in responsible community engagement work. This position oversees multiple programs and initiatives, including the IGNITE Retreat, discussion-based programming, workshops, and guest presentations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing curricula and accompanying literature about social justice and responsible community engagement;
  • Collaborating with other campus centers on educational programming that aligns with Civic House's Social Justice Framework;
  • Hiring, training, and supervising student support staff;
  • Facilitating and presenting workshops that increase awareness of Civic House programs and build students' engagement in and knowledge of social issues;
  • Coordinating evaluation of programs.


Alternative Break Programs

The Associate Director will oversee the Penn Alternative Breaks Program (PAB), which coordinates winter and spring break trips for students interested in direct service, education, and critical reflection. This position will be responsible for advising, counseling, and performing tasks for PAB's Executive Board to ensure their success. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining constant communication with the Board throughout the academic year and summer through email and regular meetings;
  • Advising the Board in their use of University resources and facilitating their communication with key stakeholders such as the Office of Risk Management, the Travel Office, the Student Activities Council, and the Office of Student Affairs;
  • Training the Board and Site Leaders on University policy and internal communication protocols;
  • Communicating and building partnerships with both Philadelphia community-based and PAB partner organizations;
  • Designing curriculum for Site Leaders and the Board that aligns with Civic House's Social Justice Framework through the encouragement of regular conscious reflection and education of trip participants;
  • Serving as the 24/7 on call campus contact for students while the groups are on trips.


PennCORP (Penn Community OutReach Program)

Over this four-day pre-orientation program, the Associate Director will provide community engagement opportunities and social justice educational experiences for selected incoming first-year students. Programming consistent with Civic House values and mission will orient incoming students to Civic House, West Philadelphia, and community organizations, and educate participants on ethical and responsible engagement in the community. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of PennCORP staff;
  • Developing training for student leaders;
  • Coordinating with the leaders of other Pre-Orientation Programs;
  • Overseeing management, administration, implementation, and evaluation of the PennCORP Program;
  • Engaging and guiding involvement of other Civic House staff in PennCORP;
  • Planning academic year programming for PennCORP participants and;
  • Designing the overall vision, curriculum, and workshops of PennCORP.


Other Duties

  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervision of Civic House student staff and other part-time staff;
  • Support Civic House events;
  • Work with Director, Senior Associate Director, and other Civic House staff in a variety of other areas, including:
  • Developing and implementing short- and long-term programmatic goals;
  • Coordinating new projects and programs;
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with community partners and other University offices, and student groups, and;
  • Participating in developing and maintaining the Civic House website and other social media


QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in Education, Social Work, or related discipline and/or equivalent education and experience; a minimum of 1-3 years professional-level involvement with higher education community service-learning activities, social justice education, work with community-based organizations, and/or student development work; extensive relevant experience may substitute for masters-level work. Deep understanding of social justice issues related to community engagement, organizing, and advocacy work. Applicants must be able to demonstrate high level of initiative, as well as strong speaking, discussion facilitation, and writing skills, and proven organizational and program planning skills. Demonstrated commitment to social justice, social change, and diversity. Basic computer skills required (Windows platform), including word processing and database use; experience with additional software and with navigating and creating internet-based resources and work-related social media helpful.
